The discussions were first reported by The Wall Street Journal, which said Trump favors the idea of bringing the conflict to an end while relying increasingly on economic pressure against Tehran. Multiple subsequent reports have cited the Journal’s account. The development presents a striking contrast between the administration’s political messaging and the military situation on the ground. Nearly 50,000 U.S. troops and 19 warships remain deployed across the region, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has extended some Middle East deployments into 2027. The continued presence is intended to give Washington the ability to respond rapidly should fighting intensify again. Vice President JD Vance said this week that he does not consider the current confrontation a war, arguing that major combat operations have largely ended despite continuing flare-ups. He declined, however, to provide a timetable for when the confrontation might formally end. Trump himself has used different language. On Friday, he described the confrontation as a relatively limited conflict and defended the administration's handling of Iran while reiterating that Tehran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. The situation remains volatile. Iranian attacks and U.S. military responses have continued, while Washington is also maintaining pressure on Iranian shipping and energy interests. A formal declaration by Trump would therefore not necessarily mean an immediate withdrawal of American forces or the end of all military operations. It could instead signal a shift toward economic and diplomatic pressure while keeping substantial U.S. forces positioned in the region. For now, Trump has not publicly declared the conflict over, and no timetable for such an announcement has been confirmed.
